The university was previously named American Graduate University, and is separate from the defunct institution named “Patten University” founded by PEF.

Patten University has approval from the California Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) to grant degrees. Approval means that Patten is in compliance with state standards set forth in California Education Code Title 3, Division 10, Part 59, Chapter 8.

Patten University is licensed, authorized, or exempt in the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia (all programs except those offered by the School of Entrepreneurship & Technology), Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington.

Currently-enrolled Patten students may be eligible to receive tuition-based financial assistance from the Federal Government, including the DOD and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Patten offers an interest-free per course tuition payment plan. New students are not eligible for these programs.
