Patten Adds 2 For Spring (Dec. 6, 2006)

Oakland, CA

In its second season back from a baseball hiatus, Patten University has made some serious strides towards developing a strong, competitive program.  When the fall semester began, the Patten Lions were 31 strong, and containing, by far, its best roster ever, dating back to 1994.

On Tuesday, December 5, the Lions went big…very bug, adding two new pitchers to the mix for the upcoming spring season.  Two San Francisco Bay Area natives are staying close to home to compete for the Lions in 2007.  The first signee, Jeremy Hill (RHP), a graduate of Berkeley High School (Berkeley, CA) and from Ohlone College (Fremont, CA), has decided to return to California after beginning the season in Texas at Lubbock Christian University (LCU).  Hill was followed by a fellow Ohlone player, and graduate of High School (Milpitas, CA), Matthew Wouters (LHP).

Hill (6’4”/240 lbs.), was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 27th round of the 2006 First Year Player Draft.  After completing two season at Ohlone, Hill attended classes this fall at LCU.  “We are excited about the addition of Hill to our pitching staff,” states Coach Wright.  “He will be a major force in the rotation for us in 07,” he added.  Hill’s Ohlone career carries the following stats:

22 GP, 12 GS, 4 W, 7 L, 77 1/3 IP. 60 R, 43 ER, 5.00 ERA, 66 H, 57 BB, 83 K, 14 HB

Wouters (6’5”/230 lbs.) finished his second season with Ohlone in May.  His big frame, aggressive pitching style, and hard throwing action combine to form a powerful pitcher.  His ability to throw strikes at a high ratio, along with his intimidating appearance, will afford the Lions with options for him in the bullpen.  Wouters saw limited action at Ohlone, but was, nonetheless, highly sought after by Coach Wright.  “This guy brings a nasty curve, decent change, and an overpowering fastball to the table.  His ability to start or close games gives us some flexibility in how we use him this season.  We are thrilled that Wouters is joining us,” stated Wright.

The upcoming season should find Hill sliding into the starting 4-man rotation, while Wouters is scheduled to begin the season in the closing role.

The Lions begin the 2007 season in San Diego, CA when they take on Point Loma Nazarene University in a three game series, which is set to begin on Friday, January 26, 2007.
